One of the most important aspects of a piano is it’s touch. Anyone who plays can tell you that the way each piano “feels” is different. This “feel” is the touch. An ideal touch for a piano is when the piano is quickly responsive when the keys are depressed. While this changes over time it can usually be restored to it’s original design by an experienced technician. This if often neglected and is the reason why pianos have a reputation for feeling spongy or loose if they are older. I have done thousands of regulations, some partial and some complete depending on what was needed.
Regulation-Regulation is the process of restoring the adjustments of the mechanical aspects of the piano(the action) to their desired settings. When done well this can completely change the way the piano plays. The adjustments made in regulating are what can modify a piano’s touch. I can usually speed up an action and make a piano much more responsive by regulating it properly. We have done 100’s of regulations over the years.
